Welcome

Welcome to the Korean American Citizens League (KACL). KACL is a non-partisan, 501(c)(3) non-profit civil rights organization working to secure the rights of the Korean American community and for all minority communities. KACL works to educate the KA and other minority communities on the importance of civil rights, citizenship, voting, and participation in our civic process.

Over 20,000 Koreans live in the State of Oregon, and over 1 million live in the United States nationally. It is KACL's belief that the more that the KA and other minority communities understand their rights and become active in civic affairs, the more influential and effective they will be when faced with issues that affect their communities.

KACL's Mission

The Korean American Citizens League is an organization that works to secure the maintain the rights and privileges of the Korean American community through education and empowerment.

KACL Exempt Purposes

1. To educate the Korean American community about their rights and privileges.

2. To promote and secure the civil rights of the Korean American community.

3. To organize and implement leadership development programs.

What We Do

KACL's work focuses on three main areas: educating the KA community, promoting civil rights, and providing leadership development opportunities.

To educate the KA community about their rights and privileges, KACL engages the community in our civic process. For example, in the 2004 election, KACL initiated a number of votor registration drives and worked with community partners to translate the Oregon Voters' Pamphlet into Korean. KACL will continue to implement voter registration campaigns and develop programs to help increase civil and legislative awareness.

To promote and secure the civil rights of the KA community, KACL builds partnerships with other KA organizations as well as with organizations representing other racial and ethnic communities. For example, KACL has hosted a series of community partnership summits to bring together organizations with similar missions to identify and work towards common goals. Through this coalition building, KACL will participate in the unified movement toward the civil rights of all racial and ethnic communities. To organize and implement leadership development programs, KACL will implement outreach programs to KA youth. For example, KACL held the first Oregon Korean American Youth (OKAY) Conference for September 2006, at Westview High School. This event provided KA youth support from the community, introduced them to KA local and national professionals, and helped them build networks that will assist them as they become tomorrow's leaders. KACL has also sponsored other youth activities such as the Oregon Asian American Youth Leadership Conference.
